Well for one thing they make really fun games. They are also able to incorporate innovative hardwares, like the switch and hand held devices.
They have really been succeeding in high quality games that stand the test of time.

What do you think is the reason behind their success ?

Nintendo has always been kind of outsider. They follow their own game principles and ideas and for the most part, don't conform to whatever the game industry is doing as a whole.

Their whole philosophy is just making fun games and ignore everything else.

Nintendo's success comes from understanding that gaming should be fun and accessible for everyone, not just hardcore gamers. They create unique, memorable characters and experiences that work for both kids and adults. Plus they're not afraid to innovate with weird controllers and concepts that other companies wouldn't risk. Their games just have that special Nintendo magic that's hard to copy.

Nintendo focuses on putting smiles on people's faces above all. Fun is #1 in their games, focusing on gameplay and minute-per-minute action. This is in opposition to some modern games from other big developers/publishers, who try to push what are effectively interactive-movies as blockbuster video games.

Another benefit is that Nintendo almost never chases trends these days, plus they are more financially independent than many major studios, opting to keep a massive cash pile at their disposal and keeping game budgets reasonable.

Based on the sales, Nintendo is at number three after PlayStation and Xbox. There are no other competitors to remove Nintendo from its third spot

Honestly I think it's because they've been around for so long. They also have timeless franchises that people of all ages can enjoy. While their business practices aren't the best, they are doing something right because their games always sell well. I really do enjoy Pokemon! They always come up with cool new ways to catch and battle Pokemon.
