Young Americans Are Spending A Whole Lot Less On Video Games This Year

New data suggests that 18- to 24-year-olds are cutting back on many different categories, with losses most concentrated in games.

A recent data has shown that compared to previous years, young Americans are spending significantly less on video games this year.
Perhaps this is due to economic uncertainties or narrowing job prospects, we do not know for sure.

What do you think is the cause?

I think it's probably a combination of the economy being rough and games getting way more expensive. When rent and groceries are eating up most of your paycheck, a $70 game becomes a luxury you can't afford. Plus there are tons of free-to-play options now, so maybe people are just being smarter with their money and finding cheaper entertainment.

It's likely a mix of many factors, though I also think "blockbuster" games that used to drive a considerable portion of dollar sales just haven't been as frequent or as quality lately. The amount of flopbuster games over the last 12 months has been staggering, with Concord and Assassin's Creed Shadows being prime examples. These games cost immeasurable amounts of money to produce and then severely underdelivered. Not only are you missing the money from these releases, but you also are seeing the opportunity cost of not producing several A or AA games with that budget. Having multiple small to medium-sized games reduces the risk of total failure and could potentially lead to an unexpected hit, building for the future. Instead, all that money is gone and so are a sizable pieces of recent dollar sales.

Economy is taking a downturn right. Job growth is slowing and prices are rising. It's not hard to see why people are spending less money, most of all on video games. Video games are a want, not a need.

I have read this news and I believe this is because they have a lot of choices for entertainment, they are also facing financial constrains due to rising prices.
